Sex and the City

Set in New York, Sex and the City is a television drama series focusing on four young, desirable and practically inseparable single women who confide in each other their ever changing and confusing sex lives. The show was originally run on HBO from 1998 to 2004, a total of six seasons. The show is based, partly, on Candace Bushnell's book with the same name compiled from her column in the New York Observer. Charming and petite Carrie Bradshaw, the narrator in the series and oft considered the alter ego of the Bushnell, keep tossing up and rejecting different views on anything and everything that has or might have impact on the sex lives of modern women. There is always a candid discussion on socially relevant issues like sexually transmitted diseases, safe sex, multiple partners and promiscuity. It often deals specifically with young and sexually liberated single women living in late 1990’s.

Beside the study of the affect that changing roles and definitions has on the four protagonists, this show also concentrates on their characters and personalities and its affect on their relationships. Carrie tries everything and is constantly disappointed only to return to a certain Mr. Big. Charlotte York, belonging to a prestigious, super rich family, has such high old-fashioned moral standards for herself that it’s impossible for any lover to live up to them when she, occasionally, manages to find a socially acceptable one. Miranda Hobbes is a red-hair lawyer, with extremely cynical views on relationships and men. Samantha Jones is the oldest and most sexually confident of the four and the utterly unashamed voice of lust at their meeting. She can flirt the pants off any man and does so often literary and fast.

The success of the series inspired to creators to put together a movie with the same name which was released in 2008.
